State Cinema

The State Cinema features a sharp, white art deco facade that stands out against the brickwork of the street. It opened in nineteen thirteen as the Vaudeville Theatre, showing silent films accompanied by a live pianist. During the nineteen thirties, the owners renovated the space to capture the modern style of the era, adding the distinctive neon signage and curved lines still visible today. It remains one of the oldest working cinemas in Australia, with original projection rooms that once held heavy nitrate film equipment.
