The sandstone facade of the Customs House Hotel features tall, arched windows and a heavy, iron-railed balcony that traces the edge of the building. Built in eighteen forty-six, this hotel served as the primary gathering point for ship captains and merchants arriving at the Hobart waterfront. The original landlord, John Hiddlestone, catered to the bustling maritime trade that defined the early colony. He kept a keg of rum perpetually ready for those coming straight off the docks to settle their debts.
