Elizabeth Street Pier

Elizabeth Street Pier extends into the Derwent River with a long, flat roof and walls made almost entirely of glass. Before this structure appeared, the pier served as a gritty industrial hub where cargo ships unloaded timber and coal for the city. During the nineteen eighties, developers converted the concrete wharf into a pavilion for restaurants and luxury office space. A permanent crane rusted at the far end for years, a reminder of the time when men hauled heavy freight across these boards.
