Victoria Dock

Victoria Dock holds the center of Hobart’s waterfront with a rugged stone perimeter and a permanent forest of masts from fishing boats and yachts. It was hand-built by convict labor in the eighteen thirties, cutting through solid rock to create a sheltered basin for sailing ships. In eighteen ninety-six, a massive steamship named the Westralia collided with the wharf during a heavy gale, crushing a portion of the stonework. You can still spot the irregular, darker patches of masonry where the repairs were patched together.
