Princes Wharf Number One dominates the Hobart waterfront with its long, low silhouette and distinctive sawtooth roofline. Built in the early nineteen forties, the structure provided a massive, sheltered space for moving goods during wartime shipping disruptions. When the Australian military requisitioned the wharf, they famously used the expansive floor to store thousands of tons of wool, creating a labyrinthine fortress of stacked bales. Today, the steel trusses still hold the weight of those memories while housing the lively Salamanca Market.
