Salamanca Arts Centre

The Salamanca Arts Centre occupies a series of sandstone warehouses built during the eighteen thirties and forties. These buildings once stored whale oil, grain, and timber for ships docking at the nearby wharves. In the nineteen seventies, artists began occupying the derelict spaces, creating a hub that forced the state government to abandon plans to demolish the row for a highway. Today, the complex houses galleries, theaters, and studios, with the original rough-hewn stone walls visible inside many of the workspace interiors.
