St. David's Anglican Cathedral

St. David’s Anglican Cathedral in Hobart is defined by its massive, crenelated square tower, which stands out against the city skyline like a piece of an English fortress. Designed by the architect James Blackburn and consecrated in eighteen seventy-four, it replaced an earlier church on the site where convicts once worshipped in the rain. When the original foundation stone was laid in eighteen twenty-three, the colony was so short on resources that the builders had to use lime made from crushed seashells.
