Town Hall

The Hobart Town Hall features a facade of solid Tasmanian sandstone topped by a prominent clock tower that chimes across the city center. Built in the eighteen sixties, it served as the hub for local governance and public gatherings. A convict named James Gowlland designed the building, having been transported to Australia for forgery. He applied his architectural skills to create this centerpiece while still serving his sentence. The building remains the official seat of the Hobart City Council today.
