Parliament House

The Parliament House in Hobart features a long, sandstone facade dominated by massive, evenly spaced columns. It sits directly on the edge of the wharf, built on a site that once served as a customs house. Construction began in eighteen thirty-five using the labor of convicts who were housed in a nearby penitentiary. During the building's early years, ships would dock right against the walls to unload goods, bringing the colony’s legislative business into direct contact with the harbor's raw commerce.
