Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery features a colonial sandstone facade punctuated by the Commissariat building, which dates back to eighteen oh eight. It holds the oldest public building in Tasmania within its walls. These stones once stored salted pork and rum for the early convict settlement, serving as a lifeline for the struggling colony. Today, the space stores massive skeletons of southern right whales and preserved specimens of the extinct thylacine, bridging the gap between a brutal penal past and modern scientific discovery.
