The Treasury Building in Hobart occupies the corner of Murray and Davey Streets with walls of dressed sandstone hauled from local quarries. It began as a courthouse in the eighteen thirties, but the colony soon repurposed it to handle the rising flow of public money. When officials realized the original basement vaults were insecure, they ordered iron bars fitted to every window and vent. Thieves once tunneled into the nearby Colonial Secretary’s office, yet the treasury vaults remained undisturbed behind those iron grates.
