Stift Wilten

The twin towers of Stift Wilten rise above the southern edge of Innsbruck, their pale yellow facade capped by bulbous, copper-green domes. This Premonstratensian abbey stands on a site where Roman soldiers once guarded the trade route over the Brenner Pass. In the late twelfth century, the abbey relocated to these fields to escape the constant threat of flooding from the Sill River. It remains a working monastery today, occupied by canons who still maintain the heavy silence of their cloisters.
