The Eduard Wallnöfer Platz holds a massive, raw concrete slab that rises at an odd, tilted angle from the ground. People in Innsbruck call this the Liberation Memorial. It commemorates the restoration of the Republic of Austria after the second world war. The space served as a parade ground during the National Socialist era, but today it functions as a public meeting point. Architects redesigned the square in two thousand and two to emphasize the sharp contrast between the past and the present.
