Annasäule

The Annasäule is a tall red marble column topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary, standing right in the middle of Maria-Theresien-Straße. It marks the day in seventeen hundred and three when the Tyrolean estates successfully repelled the Bavarian troops during the War of the Spanish Succession. Saint Anne stands at the base of the column, chosen because the last of the invading soldiers retreated on her feast day, July twenty-sixth. The column celebrates that specific, desperate victory for the city.
