The Golden Roof features two thousand, six hundred, and fifty-seven fire-gilded copper tiles that shimmer above the old town of Innsbruck. Emperor Maximilian the First commissioned the balcony in the late fifteenth century to watch tournaments and festivals from his residence. When the sun hits the metal, the facade glows intensely against the gray stone of the surrounding buildings. Local legend claims the emperor commissioned it to prove he was not bankrupt, silencing rumors about his financial troubles with a display of sheer wealth.
