Court Church Innsbruck

religious

The Hofkirche displays a row of twenty-eight oversized bronze statues lining the central aisle. These figures stand guard around an empty tomb, representing ancestors and heroes chosen by Emperor Maximilian the First. He planned the elaborate cenotaph long before his death in fifteen nineteen, commissioning artists to cast the knights and kings in metal. While Maximilian lies buried in Wiener Neustadt, this church houses the monument he designed to secure his legacy within the heart of Tyrol.
