Confederation Building

The Confederation Building features a heavy, stepped-back roofline lined with green copper and carved stone gargoyles perched high above Wellington Street. Built during the Great Depression, this limestone block served as an ambitious expansion for the federal government. When the construction began in nineteen twenty-seven, Prime Minister Mackenzie King insisted on a design that projected stability while work crews labored under the harsh economic conditions of the time. The carvings on its exterior depict the history of the country in stone.
