The red brick facade of the Arts Court stands out with its heavy, arched stone windows and the austere presence of a nineteenth-century county courthouse. Before it became a hub for galleries and independent theater, this building served as the Carleton County Courthouse starting in eighteen seventy. In eighteen sixty-nine, a man named Thomas D'Arcy McGee was assassinated nearby, and the trial of the man accused of his murder took place within these very walls, right inside the second-floor courtroom.
