The East Block of Parliament has exterior walls of sandstone and neo-Gothic towers that look like they belong in a medieval castle rather than a capital city. When the building opened in eighteen sixty-seven, it housed the offices of the Governor General and the Prime Minister. Sir John A. Macdonald used to work out of a second-floor suite here. His original desk remains in the office, and the heavy fireplace still sits in the exact spot where he once smoked his cigars.
