Supreme Court of Canada

The Supreme Court of Canada building features a massive copper roof rising into a dramatic pyramid, sitting prominently above the limestone cliffs of the Ottawa River. Architect Ernest Cormier designed this structure in the late nineteen thirties to house the nation's highest court. During the Second World War, the government repurposed the unfinished building as a temporary headquarters for the military. Soldiers filled the halls, and the Chief Justice had to wait until nineteen forty-six to finally move his court into the chambers.
