La maison jaune stands out because its entire facade is a massive trompe l'oeil painting. What appears to be a stone building with intricate architectural details is actually a flat surface covered in painted illusions. In the late eighties, the city commissioned artists to transform the bland wall. They depicted windows, moldings, and even characters peering out into the street. One figure in the painting, a cat sitting on a ledge, was based on a real animal that frequently visited the construction site.
