The Jardin de la Justice occupies a steep slope where the Rue de la Justice climbs toward the heights of Belleville. Before the neighborhood transformed into the dense patchwork of apartments seen today, this hillside held the medieval gallows of the local lords. Executioners operated here for centuries, placing the site in the shadow of the law. Today, the garden uses terraced paths and stone retaining walls to navigate the sharp incline, leaving the grim history buried beneath quiet garden beds.
