Porte de Montreuil de Paris

historic

The Porte de Montreuil is marked by a massive, curving bridge that carries the Boulevard Périphérique over the intersection. It occupies the site of one of the old gates in the Thiers wall, a fortification built in the eighteen forties to enclose Paris. For decades, the area hosted a sprawling, informal flea market where dealers sold everything from scrap metal to antique furniture. City planners eventually relocated many of those merchants to clear space for the current transit hub and highway infrastructure.
