The Place de Fontenoy forms a massive semicircle, dominated by the sweeping, Y-shaped glass and concrete headquarters of UNESCO. Designed by architects Marcel Breuer, Pier Luigi Nervi, and Bernard Zehrfuss in the nineteen fifties, it stands on the site of a former military parade ground. In seventeen forty-five, the Battle of Fontenoy took place nearby in Belgium, where French forces secured a victory against the pragmatic allies. The square honors that military history while hosting a center dedicated to global peace and culture.
