Stèle commémorative Milan Ratislav Stefanik

This stele honors Milan Rastislav Stefanik, a man whose career spanned the sciences, diplomacy, and the skies. He arrived in Paris in 1904 as a young astronomer and soon became a fixture at the Paris-Meudon Observatory. His scientific curiosity took him across the globe to observe solar eclipses and comets, missions that eventually led him to gain French citizenship and the rank of general in the French army during the First World War. Beyond his contributions to astronomy, Stefanik was a central architect of Czechoslovak independence. He co-founded the Czechoslovak National Council alongside Tomas Masaryk and Edvard Benes, operating from Paris to secure the support of the Allied powers for a new sovereign state. His life ended abruptly in 1919 when his plane crashed while he was returning to his homeland. This marker stands as a tribute to a figure who moved between these worlds, bridging the gap between his Slovak roots and his influential life in France.
