You are standing on a stretch of the Seine that once fueled the industrial heart of Paris. Long before it became this thoroughfare, the area was a rural settlement known as Javetz, where the sandy soil and riverside location made it a prime spot for market gardens and fishing. By the eighteenth century, the site had gained a more industrial reputation as the home of a major chemical factory producing sodium hypochlorite, the disinfectant commonly known as bleach or eau de Javel.
