Viaduc de la rue du Rocher

The Viaduc de la rue du Rocher crosses the tracks leading into the Gare Saint-Lazare with an imposing iron frame. Built in eighteen sixty-eight, this bridge replaced an earlier stone structure that could not handle the growing weight of traffic as the railway expanded. Gustave Caillebotte lived nearby and painted this bridge repeatedly, capturing the way the cast iron creates a tunnel over the trains. He kept his focus on the dark, geometric patterns of the structure against the city light.
