The Place Joseph Epstein sits as a triangular island where the Rue des Couronnes meets the Rue de Ménilmontant. It honors a man who commanded the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans, a major resistance group during the German occupation of Paris. In February nineteen forty-four, Epstein stood before a firing squad at the Fort du Mont-Valérien. He chose to face the soldiers without a blindfold, keeping his eyes fixed on the horizon until the end. Today, the space holds only a simple stone marker.
