Fontaine Ephésienne de Georges Jeanclos

The Fontaine Ephésienne stands on the Place de la Bataille de Stalingrad, created in 1989 by the French sculptor Georges Jeanclos. It features one of the artist's signature figures, known as a Dormeur or sleeper, which is cast in bronze. The sculpture draws inspiration from the ancient Greek goddess Artemis of Ephesus, often depicted with multiple breast-like structures that appear on the base of the work. Jeanclos was a survivor of the Nazi occupation who hid in the forests around Vichy as a child, and his work frequently explores themes of trauma, resilience, and spiritual serenity through delicate, draped human forms.
