The garden you are approaching occupies land that was once part of the expansive estate belonging to the seventeenth century police lieutenant general, Nicolas de La Reynie. The grounds were famously laid out by the master landscape architect André Le Nôtre, who shaped the gardens into a refined, formal space during an era when this part of the city was still defined by orchards and countryside retreats.
