Compagnie Abraxas

The Espaces d'Abraxas in Noisy-le-Grand dominates the view with its towering, U-shaped block of prefabricated concrete, designed to resemble a classical amphitheater carved from stone. Architect Ricardo Bofill built this housing complex in nineteen eighty-two to challenge the grim monotony of suburban apartment blocks. He used industrial techniques to create grand, theatrical forms that feel like a Roman ruin dropped into the Parisian suburbs. The structure frames an open square that functions as a massive, quiet stage for the thousands of residents living within.
