Saifukuji

The wooden gates of Saifukuji open into a small courtyard dominated by a single, weathered stone statue of Jizo, the protector of travelers and children. While many temples in Kyoto draw massive crowds for their sprawling gardens or golden pavilions, this neighborhood temple remains a quiet corner dedicated to local families. Centuries ago, residents gathered here to register their births and deaths with the monks, binding the daily lives of Rokurocho’s merchants directly to the temple’s wooden rafters and incense-heavy halls.
