The Federal Palace of Switzerland anchors the southern edge of the Old City with a massive green copper dome that rises above the Aare river. Inside these sandstone walls, the National Council and the Council of States meet to shape the nation's laws. When the architect Hans Auer finished the building in nineteen oh two, he filled the central hall with symbols from all twenty-two original cantons. A marble relief of a sleeping knight still guards the entrance, watching over the busy parliamentarians.
