Waisenhausplatz

The Waisenhausplatz takes its name from the orphanage built here in seventeen forty-six. That institution moved into a grand, three-story building that dominated the square for over two centuries. In nineteen seventy-three, city officials demolished the orphanage to make way for a modern administration building. Today, the square serves as an open space for markets and gatherings, anchored by the stone foundation of that original building. A lone fountain stands near the center, marking the spot where children once played.
