Pfeiferbrunnen

A brightly painted figure of a bagpiper stands atop a stone column here, the Pfeiferbrunnen. It replaced a simpler wooden trough in fifteen forty-five, commissioned by the city to replace an older well. The sculptor Hans Gieng carved the musician with a fox at his feet and a monkey on his shoulder. While the original statue sits inside the Bern Historical Museum to keep the sandstone safe from the weather, this vivid replica maintains the sixteenth-century style that defines the city's many fountains.
