Cathedral of Bern

The Bern Minster is identified by a sandstone spire that reaches three hundred twenty-eight feet, making it the tallest church tower in Switzerland. Construction began in fourteen twenty-one to replace a smaller chapel, but it took nearly two centuries to finish the nave. Matthias Heinzenberger began the work, though the final stone on the spire was not set until eighteen ninety-three. During the Reformation, the building lost its side altars and statues, yet it remains the primary landmark of the city.
