Schützenbrunnen

The Schützenbrunnen features a stone soldier carrying a musket and a banner, standing atop a column in the middle of the street. This fountain honors the marksmen of Bern who practiced their craft here for centuries. In fifteen forty-three, the city council commissioned this statue to replace an older wooden version. The stone marksman stares toward the site of the former shooting range, a reminder of the competitive spirit that once defined the city’s defense guilds during the middle ages.
