Simsonbrunnen

The Simsonbrunnen features a painted stone figure of Samson prying open the jaws of a lion. While the original fountain dates back to the mid-sixteenth century, the central pillar reflects the restoration work of Hans Gieng. Samson stands as a symbol of physical strength, but the local butchers’ guild used this fountain as their meeting point. During the nineteenth century, the statue was repainted and moved slightly, yet it remains the centerpiece of the lower old town streets in Bern.
