The second floor of the house at Kramgasse forty-nine holds a narrow, wood-paneled apartment that looks much as it did in nineteen oh three. Albert Einstein rented these rooms with his wife Mileva and their son Hans Albert during his years as a patent clerk in Bern. The layout remains cramped, with the original stove and a view of the medieval street below. Here, Einstein wrote four papers that changed physics, including his theory of special relativity, while juggling family life.
