The Vennerbrunnen features a stone knight clad in full armor, holding a banner and a sword. He stands atop a tall pillar in the middle of the street, guarding the city’s water supply. During the sixteenth century, the Venner was a powerful political official in Bern who commanded the local militia. He carried his colors into battle, and this fountain commemorates that role. The current sculpture is a replica, but the original fifteenth century figure remains preserved nearby for those who seek it.
