The house at Junkerngasse fifty-four features a heavy, arched stone doorway topped by an ornate wrought-iron lantern that has hung there for centuries. This narrow townhouse stands in the heart of Bern’s old city, where merchant families once built upward to store goods in cellars and live in the floors above. In the seventeen seventies, the artist Johann Ludwig Aberli lived here, capturing the surrounding Alps in delicate etchings that helped turn the Swiss landscape into a global obsession for early tourists.
