Rathausplatz

The Rathausplatz is paved with a distinctive, slightly sloping grid of cobblestones that sits directly in front of the Bern City Hall. This square serves as the historical political heart of the city. In fourteen oh five, a massive fire leveled the original wooden buildings here, prompting the council to mandate stone construction for all future dwellings. During the mid-sixteenth century, workers installed the Justice Fountain in the center, featuring a statue of a woman holding scales, blindfolded to represent impartial judgment.
