Grand Parade

The Grand Parade is defined by its stone balustrade and the sweeping view it provides across the River Avon toward Pulteney Bridge. Built in the late eighteenth century, this terrace served as the city’s fashionable promenade where visitors walked to see and be seen. During the nineteen thirties, the city council famously prohibited musicians from playing here because the noise disturbed the local residents, leading to a long, bitter argument between the performers, the hoteliers, and the city magistrates over the public air.
