John Wood the Elder designed Queen Square in the seventeen twenties with the vision of creating an architectural ensemble that mirrored the scale of Roman forums. Its defining feature is a series of interconnected townhouses forming a continuous, palace-like façade on three sides, faced in Bath stone. When Wood began construction, he even moved into one of the houses himself to signal his commitment to the project. He hoped the square would serve as the grand entrance to an entirely new, neoclassical city.
