The fan vaulting in the ceiling of Bath Abbey stretches out like rows of intricate stone palm leaves, a pattern that draws the eye upward and binds the entire space together. King Edgar was crowned the first King of all England on this ground in nine hundred seventy-three. Centuries later, the final dissolution of the monasteries nearly leveled the site, until a local investor purchased the stripped shell of the church for five hundred marks and gifted it back to the city.
