The Cross Bath stands apart from the grander, nearby Roman Baths as a small, circular pool enclosed by a high, austere stone wall. It sits on the site where the Catholic Queen Mary of Modena bathed in sixteen eighty-seven, hoping the thermal waters would help her conceive an heir. She became pregnant shortly after her visit, a success that fueled the religious and political tensions leading to the Glorious Revolution. Today, the water bubbles up directly into the basin from the earth below.
