Cleveland Bridge

The Cleveland Bridge features a heavy cast-iron arch that spans the River Avon with a single, sweeping leap. Opened in eighteen twenty-seven, it allowed landowners on the north bank to develop their property by connecting it directly to the heart of Bath. When the tolls were eventually abolished in nineteen twenty-seven, a local resident named George Dunning famously celebrated by being the very last person to pay the penny fee before the gates swung open for good.
