The EASTGATE

The Eastgate features a distinct, curved stone facade that wraps around the corner where the high street meets the river. It stands on the site of the city’s medieval eastern gate, which restricted movement into Roman Bath for centuries. By the nineteen twenties, city officials tore down the old stone structures to widen the road for motor traffic. They replaced the gate with this commercial building, which famously housed the city's first department store, complete with a rooftop garden for shoppers.
