Top Lock Cottage sits right where the Kennet and Avon Canal meets the flight of locks leading down into Bath. It is a stone building with a steeply pitched roof and a chimney that marks the end of a long, heavy journey for boatmen. For decades, the lock keeper lived here to manage the passage of coal and stone barges. One keeper, William Orchard, raised his family inside these walls while hauling the wooden paddles that let the canal water rise and fall.
