St Malachy's Church features a heavy, dark grey stone exterior that stands out against the surrounding brickwork of the Markets neighborhood. Inside, the ceiling mimics the intricate, vaulted plasterwork of the Henry the Seventh Chapel in Westminster Abbey. Father Cornelius Denvir commissioned this design in eighteen forty-four. He wanted a space that provided dignity to his parishioners who lived in the nearby overcrowded tenements. The congregation paid for the construction themselves, often contributing small copper coins during the height of the Great Famine.
